Living with an EV

Big Boost for EV Buyers in the UK

16 July 2025

In a positive turn of events, new electric vehicle (EV) buyers in the UK are in for a significant boost this summer. With the recent government announcements, now is the perfect time to make the switch to electric. The government has unveiled two new schemes designed to accelerate the adoption of EVs, and here's how it could help you be part of this electrifying movement.

The first scheme offers a substantial discount of up to £3,750 on the purchase of new electric cars. This initiative is set to slash costs for thousands of prospective EV buyers, making the transition to electric more affordable and accessible. The grant is part of a broader £650 million government scheme aimed at accelerating the switch to zero-emission transport. Vehicles priced at £37,000 or less will qualify for support, with the most environmentally friendly models eligible for up to £3,750 in grants.

In practical terms this could help with the purchase of the following cars and perhaps fifty others.

Likely Eligible EVs Approx list price (before discount)
Citroen e C3 £22k
Renault 5 Electric £23k
Ford Puma Gen-E £30k
Nissan Leaf £30k
VW ID.3 £31k

In addition to the financial incentives, the government has also announced a new scheme to modernise EV charging signage on major roads. This initiative will see EV charging hubs, which have more than doubled since the beginning of 2023, being signposted from motorways and major A-roads for the first time. This move is designed to make it easier for drivers to locate charging stations, thereby increasing confidence in the EV infrastructure.

The benefits of switching to an electric vehicle go beyond just the financial incentives. EVs are known for their lower operating costs, reduced maintenance, and environmental benefits. By making the switch, you're not only saving money but also playing a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

The government has also announced a £63 million investment package to supercharge Britain's electric vehicle infrastructure. This includes a £25 million scheme to help more households, especially those without driveways, access cheaper at-home EV charging. New cross-pavement technology will allow cables to run safely beneath pavements, connecting homes directly to parked vehicles. This will enable more families to tap into cheaper domestic electricity rates, saving drivers up to £1,500 a year.

There are more public chargers (82k) than people realise, but they are often hidden in plain sight. Increasing signs for the public network is vital to help the EV transition as it will create confidence for drivers both now and in the future. It is great to see more support for those without off-street parking so that they can also benefit from the EV revolution.

The AA had called for these initiatives in our Motoring Manifesto and EV Viewpoint Report so are delighted that our campaigning and that of others has paid off.

These latest initiatives have created a unique window of opportunity for EV buyers. With substantial financial incentives and improved infrastructure, now is the time to make the switch to electric. Embrace the future of transportation, save money, and contribute to a cleaner planet. Don't miss out on this electrifying opportunity – the time to make the switch is now.
