Automatic vans are far more common than they used to be, and they can be a great fit if you spend a lot of time in traffic, do multi-drop work, or you simply want an easier drive day to day. The key is to understand what type of automatic you’re buying. Some vans use a traditional torque-converter auto, others use a dual-clutch gearbox, and some use automated manuals. They can feel very different on the road, especially when pulling away loaded or reversing up an incline.
When you’re buying used, a test drive is everything. The van should pull away cleanly, shift without hesitation, and creep predictably at low speeds. If it shunts, flares (revs rise without speed), or feels jerky when manoeuvring, treat that as a warning sign. Check the service history carefully too. Many automatics need gearbox oil changes at specific intervals, and skipping them can shorten gearbox life.
Finally, remember that automatics can cost more to repair than manuals, so buying on condition matters. If you want extra reassurance before you commit, an AA Vehicle Check or inspection can help you spot issues early.
