Minibus buying guide

A used minibus needs a different mindset from a standard van, because you’re responsible for passengers. Start by checking the seating layout, seatbelts and access, especially if it’s been used for school runs, community transport or airport shuttles. Minibuses often do lots of stop start miles, which can mean more wear in brakes, tyres, suspension and clutch than the mileage suggests.

Next, get clear on licensing and how the vehicle will be used. In the UK, “minibus” typically means more than 8 passenger seats, and there are specific rules on whether you can drive one on a car licence or need a D1/PCV entitlement.

Practical checks matter too. Make sure the doors and steps work smoothly, that the heating and ventilation are effective for a full load of people, and that the van pulls cleanly when fully loaded. Finally, if you’ll be driving into London, TfL’s ULEZ standards for vans and minibuses are Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel, so check the declared emissions standard for the exact vehicle you’re buying rather than guessing by age.
