A combi van is built to carry both people and cargo, which makes it a strong choice if you need a second row of seats for a crew, but still want a secure load area for tools. The compromise is that extra seats, glazing and trim can reduce payload compared with a basic panel van, so it’s worth checking the plated weights and deciding what matters most: passengers, payload or load length.
Used combi vans are often ex fleet, ex utility or used by trades, so look for signs of hard use inside. Check seat mountings, seatbelts and door runners, and make sure the bulkhead (if fitted) is solid and rattle free. If the seats are removable or a folding bench type, confirm the latching mechanisms work properly and that you’re happy with how quickly the layout can be changed.
Also think about security and insurance. Windows can make break ins easier if you regularly leave tools on board, so a good alarm, deadlocks and sensible storage are important. Finally, make sure the van fits your routes. Combi vans can be longer and heavier than you expect, and speed limits can differ depending on how the vehicle is classified. An AA inspection can help you confirm the condition before you buy.
