A panel van is the classic working format: two (or three) seats up front and an enclosed load bay designed for tools, parcels or equipment. When you’re buying used, the best starting point is size. Small vans suit urban routes and tight parking, medium vans are a strong all rounder, and large vans are built for bulky loads and higher payloads. Don’t just shop by model name; compare load length, load volume and payload on the plate, because trim level, engines and options can change the usable figures.
Security is a key reason many people choose a panel van, so check the condition of locks, door seals and the bulkhead, and think about adding deadlocks if you carry tools. Also look for working wear: dents in the load bay, torn ply lining, door runner damage and scuffed floors. Those don’t always make a van a bad buy, but they can hint at hard life and overloading.
A proper test drive should include hills and a motorway stretch, plus slow-speed manoeuvres. Check for clutch slip, gearbox noise and steering pull. If it’s a modern diesel, make sure there are no warning lights relating to emissions systems. An AA Vehicle Check or inspection can add confidence before you commit.
